Entryway design tips

Your entryway sets the tone for your entire home. It’s the first thing guests see and the space you walk through every single day. The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to make it feel fresh, intentional, and elevated. With a focused plan, you can completely update your entryway in just one day.

Step 1: Clear It Out

Start by removing everything: shoes, baskets, artwork, hooks, consoles. Wipe down walls, baseboards, doors, and trim. Vacuum or sweep thoroughly. This blank slate allows you to see the space clearly and rethink its function.

Ask yourself:

  • Is there enough storage?
  • Is it cluttered or calm?
  • Does it reflect the style of the rest of your home?

Often, the biggest transformation simply comes from decluttering and editing.

Step 2: Refresh the Walls

Nothing changes a space faster than paint. Consider a soft neutral for a light, airy feel, or a moody accent color to create drama in a small foyer. Even repainting your front door (inside) can create a high-end look.

If painting isn’t your thing, try:

  • Adding picture frame molding
  • Installing a statement wallpaper on one wall
  • Updating trim with crisp white paint

This is also a great time to swap out outdated light fixtures for something more modern. A sculptural pendant or flush mount instantly elevates the space.

Step 3: Upgrade the Anchor Piece

Every entryway needs an anchor, typically a console table or bench. If yours feels dated, consider replacing it or restyling what you already have.

Style it intentionally:

  • A large mirror or statement artwork centered above
  • A table lamp for warmth
  • A tray for keys and mail
  • A small stack of books and a decorative object
  • A vase with fresh greenery

Layering in texture—wood, metal, woven baskets—adds depth and interest.

Step 4: Add Functional Storage

Entryways can quickly become drop zones. Install wall hooks for coats and bags. Add a slim shoe cabinet or attractive baskets underneath a bench. If space allows, consider a narrow cabinet with doors to hide everyday clutter.

The goal is simple: Everything should have a place.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Finish the space with:

  • A washable runner for softness and practicality
  • Updated hardware on the front door
  • Coordinated accessories (think cohesive finishes like matte black, brushed brass, or polished nickel)
  • A subtle scent like a diffuser or candle

By the end of the day, your entryway should feel intentional, organized, and welcoming.

Small projects like this add polish and perceived value.
