This month what we know as Landmark Mall will be gone. Demolition of the shopping center that has been part of the Alexandria region from 1965-2017 will be torn down this month and eventually replaced by the West End Alexandria project.

The multi-phased project will completely change the use and look of the 52-acre site at Duke St., I-395 and Van Dorn St. The project includes 4 million square feet of new development for a mixed-use community and includes the new Inova Alexandria Hospital.

Relocating from Seminary Road, the $1 billion, new hospital will expand on what it’s current location offers with a larger emergency room, trauma center, private patient rooms, medical office buildings and the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. The hospital campus will take up 11 acres and is expected to be fully complete by 2028.

The remaining 41 acres of the site will house an “urban village” with residential, retail, commercial and entertainment features. Developer Foulger-Pratt expects the first buildings to open in 2025.

So what will the former mall look like in the upcoming years?

The center of the project is planned to hold an open plaza with a lawn, tree grove, water feature, pavilion, amphitheater and potential ice rink. This would be surrounded by buildings that include residential units, retail and commercial space and the new Alexandria Fire Department’s Fire Station 208. The are would also have services for bus rapid transit, Alexandria’s DASH Bus and Metrobus.

As the project begins demolition and moves into the construction phase, we’ll bring you more information as to new retailers and residence options.
