Friday, July 4, 8:00 PM – 2:00 AM. Red White & Booze. Shipgarten, 7581 Colshire Dr., Tysons, VA 22102. Come out to Shipgarten on Friday, July 4th from 8pm-2am for our Red, White and Booze Festival. Enjoy sampling a wide variety of drinks, food, compete in festival events for prizes, or take pictures in our photo booth- there’s something for everyone! Shipgarten is 100% dog friendly, whether on-leash or in our off-leash dog park! We offer lots of treats such as Pup Cups and Kongs filled with peanut butter so the whole family can enjoy a treat.

July Story Times and Interactive Programs

Tuesday, July 1 – July 31, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Patriots Path: A Revolutionary War Encampment. George Washington’s Mount Vernon 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, Mount Vernon, VA 22121. What was life like for Continental soldiers and patriots during the Revolutionary War? Immerse yourself in the daily life of soldiers, military officers, and the camp followers who traveled with the army as you explore a Revolutionary War encampment. At this hands-on attraction, you can touch the items inside the soldiers’ tents and officer’s tent, wash clothes in the laundry yard, and examine cooking utensils used by camp followers. This attraction is made possible thanks to Americana Corner.

Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, July 1, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 15, 19, 20, 22, 26, 27 and 29, 10 AM – 10:30 AM. Tiny Troops Story Time. National Museum of the United States Army, 1775 Liberty Drive, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060. Enjoy a bouncy story time filled with rhymes, books and activities. Stay afterward to make friends and play in Fort Discover. Here, children use imaginative play to learn about Army life and innovations. While best for children aged 3 to 6 years old, all ages are welcome to this 30-minute, weekly story time program. Participation is free and included with a general admission ticket. Preregistration not required.

Tuesdays, 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM and 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Story Time: Zoom Rocket Zoom. National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. National Air and Space Museum Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center. Join us for a story about rockets and the different objects they can send into space. After the story we will make a rocket that you can pretend to zoom to the Moon or anywhere in space.

Thursdays, Story Time: Yellow Copter. National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Join us for a reading of Yellow Copter by Kersten Hamilton and learn about how helicopters can be used in rescue missions, for firefighting, for traffic and more! After the story stay to make a whirlygig that spins like a helicopter.  Also offered at 11:30 am. Sponsored by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. 

Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Family Activity Day. National Museum of the United States Army. 1775 Liberty Drive, Fort Belvior, VA 22060. Visit us at the Experiential Learning Center! Children ages 4 – 8 are welcome to come create crafts and learn more about the U.S. Army. Participation is free and included with a general admission ticket.

Weekly Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Camp Grow. Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, 9750 Meadowlark Gardens Court, Vienna, VA 22182. CAMP GROW at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, in Vienna, VA, invites children and teens to explore nature through hands-on discovery activities, gardening, nature walks, hikes, art, crafts, storytelling, and animal programs. Picnic lunches in the Gardens, games, and cooperative challenges add to camp fun, encourage new friendships, and provide great summer memories. Our camp staff works hard to create a curriculum that weaves new activities with familiar annual traditions. CAMP GROW is designed to engage, challenge, educate, and encourage a sense of community. We value and encourage the inclusion of all campers in every activity.

We will average 15-17 mph for around 30 miles and travel through neighborhoods and on main roads. The majority of the ride is on the road, on rolling terrain with a few hills to climb. Please arrive a few minutes before the ride so we can leave as close to 9:30 am as possible. If the roads are wet or icy the ride is cancelled. Road bikes and Helmets are required. Evoking the tradition of second line parades, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue fuse jazz, funk, pop, Hip Hop, and rock music into a celebratory and buoyant bayou sound. Get ready to turn up the funk even more when swamp rock purveyors JJ Grey & Mofro and Big Easy’s powerhouse group Dumpstaphunk open the show.

Concert: Friday, July 25. Orff’s Carmina Burana, Wolf Trap. 1551 Trap Rd. Vienna, VA. “O Fortuna!” Carmina Burana’s towering first movement rolls in like thunder, announcing a celebration of spring, the delightful debauchery of nights at a tavern, and the joys and sorrows of love. Although the words were written by medieval monks, this outrageous cantata is an unstoppable force brimming with bawdy, irreverent satire on the ever-changing fate of man. The National Symphony Orchestra, two choruses, and stars of the Wolf Trap Opera come together for Carl Orff’s epic choral masterwork. The evening ends with selections of the best loved melodies from the famous opera, Carmen. Come hear Wolf Trap Opera perform the entire show on August 15th.
