For more than three decades, talk of a Potomac Yard Metro has been flowing through meetings and news reports. Now, on May 19, the $370 million project will open to the public.

By Lynn Norusis

Linked up to the blue and yellow lines between National Airport and Braddock Road stations, the Potomac Yard Metro station will have three entrances to the station—an east side entrance for the Potomac Green neighborhood, a west side entrance near the Amtrak tracks and a southwest entrance.

Along with the new metro station comes more development. Virginia Tech’s innovation campus (which broke ground in fall 2021) is in the neighborhood, and adjacent is Amazon HQ2. Over the years, the station is expected to support 26,000 new jobs and 13,000 new residents.

“This is our biggest economic development initiative. This is our biggest transportation initiative. This is our biggest climate initiative. This is our biggest infrastructure initiative,” Wilson told DCist of the station. “This is a huge initiative for the city and it hit so many different policy areas for us as a community.”

The development of the area will come in phases and will take years, maybe decades, for full build out. But some construction is already underway. The City of Alexandria implemented a Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee to make sure build-out is in line with the overall vision of the area, and other working groups will oversee the specific areas: North Potomac Yard and South Potomac Yard.

Upon full build-out, the master planned development will include a town center with over two million square feet of commercial uses and up to 625 hotel rooms, and a mix of townhomes, condominiums, and apartments for a total of approximately 1,700 residential units.
