Northern Virginia travelers could soon have another option for commercial air travel. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Part 139 Airport Operating Certificate to Washington Manassas Airport, formerly Manassas Regional Airport, clearing the way for the airport to accommodate certain commercial passenger airline operations.

The certification represents a significant milestone for both Manassas and the Commonwealth. According to the FAA, Manassas Regional Airport is the first airport in Virginia in 53 years to receive a new Part 139 operating certificate. Nationwide, only five other airports have received new operating certificates from the FAA during the past decade.

The airport is aiming to begin commercial passenger service in November 2027.

Once commercial service begins, Manassas will add another passenger airport option for travelers in the greater Washington, D.C. region, alongside Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport and BWI Airport. For Northern Virginia residents—particularly those in Prince William County and the surrounding communities—the addition of passenger service could provide a convenient alternative to traveling to Dulles, Reagan National or BWI. Commercial flights could also bring broader economic benefits to the Manassas area, including new jobs, increased business activity and additional investment surrounding the airport.

More improvements are planned as the airport prepares for its next chapter. A new air traffic control tower is expected to be constructed over the next several years to support airport operations and future growth as well as runway improvements.
