16 chores to check off the list for a lawn and outdoor space you can enjoy this season.

By Lynn Norusis

Mother Nature has made time for you to tackle your home to-do list this year. While we are all distancing ourselves from each other, this leaves plenty of time for you to get out in the fresh air in the confines of your own yard and get it looking spectacular for the season ahead.

Here are some areas to get you started.

  • Aerate the lawn. This will improve air circulation and allow for water and fertilizer to absorb thoroughly. It will give roots a stronger hold, reduce soil compaction and make your lawn more tolerant to the elements.
  • Book A/C inspection. The last thing you want to find out on a hot, sweltering day is that the A/C doesn’t work. Get it checked early.
  • Reverse direction of ceiling fans.
  • Change batteries in smoke detectors. Do this twice a year.
  • Clean out the dryer vent.
  • Wash windows. You want to be able to see all of your beautiful foliage from the inside too.
  • Clean fridge coils. This will make the circulation in your refrigerator work to its best potential and keep it cooling and quiet.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts.
  • Flip mattress.
  • Wipe down inside of refrigerator and freezer.
  • Clean baseboards and trim. These often overlooked spaces in the house tend to collect a lot of dust and dirt. Make them shine.
  • Wash range hood and clean oven. Again, this is something that should be done at least twice a year.
  • Plant seasonal flowers.
  • Sand and stain outside exposed wood. The elements of the winter may have exposed some areas of the exterior wood of your home that need repair. Check all around the house.
  • Prep your grill. When you are ready to get cooking you don’t want to be thwarted by your devices.
  • Check for wood-destroying insects. You can take a look yourself or have an expert come out at a low cost to take a look so you can get ahead of whatever critters may have taken up residence in your home.
