Restaining a deck

If you’re looking for a high-impact home project you can tackle in a single day, painting or restaining your deck is at the top of the list. Whether you’re preparing to entertain this spring or getting your home market-ready, a refreshed deck instantly elevates curb appeal and outdoor living space.

Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to get it done efficiently.

Step 1: Check the Forecast

Pick a dry day with mild temperatures (ideally 50–85 degrees). You’ll need at least 24 hours without rain for proper drying and curing.

Step 2: Clear and Prep the Space

Remove all furniture, planters, grills, and décor. Sweep thoroughly to eliminate dirt and debris. If there’s mildew or old peeling stain, use a deck cleaner or brightener and scrub with a stiff brush. For best results, lightly power wash but allow the wood to dry completely (usually several hours).

If your deck has peeling paint or rough patches, lightly sand those areas to create a smooth, even surface.

Step 3: Protect Surrounding Areas

Use painter’s tape and plastic sheeting to protect siding, doors, and nearby landscaping. This step saves you time on cleanup later.

Step 4: Choose the Right Product

If your deck has never been coated, opt for a stain (transparent or semi-solid depending on how much wood grain you want visible). If it’s previously painted, stick with paint unless you’re prepared to fully strip it. Use an exterior product designed specifically for decks to withstand foot traffic and weather.

Step 5: Apply Strategically

Start with railings and vertical surfaces first using a brush. Then move to the deck boards. Use a roller with an extension pole for speed, but back-brush to ensure even coverage and stain penetration.

Work in small sections and follow the direction of the wood grain. Avoid over-applying. Thin, even coats are better than thick ones.

Step 6: Let It Cure

Allow the deck to dry according to product instructions, typically 24–48 hours before replacing furniture.

In one focused Saturday, you can transform a tired, weathered deck into a polished extension of your home. It’s one of those projects that pays off immediately both in enjoyment and in long-term value.
