Ring in the New Year!  Cathedral carillonneur Edward M. Nassor continues the bell-ringing tradition by playing a recital on the Cathedral’s 53-bell carillon.

First Hike Fairfax
Get out and hike!  First Hike Fairfax encourages everyone to start 2021 with an outdoor hike. Visit any Fairfax County Park Authority trail January 1-3, 2021. Pick your favorite photo that celebrates your hike and the scenery you encounter. Then enter the Fairfax County Park Authority’s First Hike Photo Contest by January 3. It is a three-day event this year to help promote social distancing on the trails and prevent overcrowding on day one. January 1-3

Free outdoor concerts at the State Theater this month include 80s night with More, More, More on January 1st ,  Joe Keyes & The Later Bloomer Band on January 2nd,  Jesters to the Left on January 9th, The Free Flowing Music Experience on January 16th and U2TOPIA  – A U2 Tribute band on January 17th.  More info at link.

See The Northern Lights
Join Delta College Planetarium Facebook Page for a live stream event about the Northern Lights.  Astronomer Mike Murray explores what causes the Aurora Borealis phenomena and how to observe them. Time will also be given to the stories and folklore of the aurora, from Canada and to the southern hemisphere where they are known as the Aurora Australis.

Restaurant Week – Support a local restaurant and try some great cuisine

Get your appetite ready to try a new restaurant while supporting a local business.  Alexandria Restaurant Week To-Go will be held from January 22nd – February 7th.  More than 60 restaurants will offer a $49 takeout dinner for two. And new this winter many will also offer a $25 takeout dinner for one.

Metropolitan Washington Restaurant week
The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington announced an extended two-week event January 18th  to January 31st.  Participating Md, DC and VA restaurants will offer multi-course dinner menus for $35 or $55 per person, and may also serve family-style packages for two ($60 to $100) or four ($130 to $210). Multi-course lunch and brunch menus will also be available for $22 per person.
