It’s that time of year when your garden has stopped producing and it’s time to clean out the garden. The FOCUS on NoVA Team used the PlanetNatural.com/fall-soil-prep guide to give a three step guide to getting your garden ready for winter.
1) Dispose of any plant debris that may harbor disease or insect pests. Leave the seed heads of asters, black-eyed Susan, coneflowers and sunflowers for the birds to munch on. Compost the rest.
2) Turn the soil with a spade to bring up any plant roots and turn under any remaining plant material so it has a chance to decompose. As you turn over your soil this will bring up grubs and other worms under the surface up to the light of day where birds can eat them. Let the birds do their job.
