As the summer continues to heat up we found 10 Fun Things To Do In August while social distancing.  Some will keep you cool, some will help your creativity and some will satisfy your food cravings.

1.  Alexandria’s Maker Market Workshops
Join the creative expertise of the Maker’s Market artists for a fun workshop.  There are different DIY classes for kids and adults to learn from a variety of Alexandria-based makers.

2.   Alexandria and Del Ray Summer Sidewalk Sale
The Alexandria and Del Ray Summer Sidewalk Sale is returning for its 11th year on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16.  The event will offer shoppers the chance to stroll outdoors to shop the wares of 50-plus local boutiques.

3.  Individual Boat tours at National Harbor
Monumental Boat Tours has released a new boat, called the CraigCat, which can be rented for tours on the river, to Mount Vernon or DC. Each boat accommodates one or two people and a guide comes along in a separate boat to give the tour.  So you can have fun on Potomac and stay cool while also following social distancing guidelines.

4.  DockDogs and Puppyfest at Maggie Malick Wine Cave
If you have a dog that is looking for a fun way to cool down – head out to Maggie Malick Wine Cave and enter your pup in the DockDogs/Puppy Palooza while you enjoy some delicious wine.  The dogs compete to determine who can get the most air running off the deck into the pond.  Prizes are awarded.

5.   Visit the Aspire Design House
Located at 952 Mackall Farms Lane in McLean, Virginia, this new construction home was transformed by 33 regional, national and international designers.  The show house will be open Wednesdays – Sundays from August 23rd through September 14th.  More info here

6.  Washington Restaurant Week
This year’s Restaurant Week will run for two weeks from August 17th to 30th.  You can now get your meals in carryout form for either solo or family-style dining, with the option of cocktails and wine. Restaurants will offer curbside pickup.  A great way to support a restaurant and also try somewhere new. Participating restaurants are listed at link.

7.  Alexandria Restaurant Week To-Go
Alexandria is sponsoring Restaurant Week To-Go.  Diners can get  a $49 dinner for two for  takeout, delivery or curbside pickup.  It runs for 10 days and two weekends from August 21st – 30th with more than 60 restaurants participating.

8.  Beat the Heat – Rent a Local Pool
If you are finding these 90 plus temp days unbearable – beat the heat by renting a pool.  Similar to Airbnb, with Swimply  you can now cool off by renting a local private pool by the hour while still following social distancing guidelines.  Make a reservation, pack up the kids and cool off.

9.  Sunflower Field of Dreams
If you haven’t visited yet – take the opportunity to see the Sunflower Field of Summer at Burnside Farm in Nokesville.  They offer daily and sunset visits making for the perfect Instagram shot.
