Bathroom Trends 2020 – The Future Is Looking White and Bright

The Focus on NoVA team met with Chris Peters, designer at Biltmore Design Galleria to talk about current bathroom trends.

Baths and Showers
First, in terms of remodeling, clients are removing the big, cumbersome tub decks with a drop-in tub and they are moving toward free standing tubs and larger showers.  Some customers are even opting to not have a tub and going for a larger shower and bigger vanities with lots of storage.

Shower Doors
Frameless glass door all day every day.  There is no such thing as a framed door anymore.

Countertops
Quartz countertops are still the most popular material but we are seeing more of a push towards Quartzite – a natural stone that looks more like marble but is more dense than granite.

Vanities
White shaker cabinets are the top choice for bathrooms.   Since bathrooms tend to be smaller spaces, the white makes it feel bigger. We are starting to see some warm wood grains emerge in vanities but white shaker is by far the most popular.

Flooring
Colors are still staying in the grey and white family.  This color trend is hanging longer than we expected.  Most clients still want the classic white look with the faux white Carrara marble.

Select Tile in Anderson White which is a popular choice.

Tile
For tile, it is all large formats 12 X 24 or 24 X 48 inch tile which many clients love because it allows for very few grout joints.  People are all about eliminating grout joints.

Bathroom Accents
Accents are a moving target tight now.  We are doing a lot of large shower niches and using that as the accent piece.  For example, we just completed a niche that was 30 inches wide by 60 inches tall with glass shelves. That is where we are seeing the accent and the niche is functional so it has a dual purpose.

Lighting
For the most part is almost all recess lighting in showers.  There is a popular trend of using sconces around vanity. Another light trend we are seeing is customers asking for a suspended light, like a chandelier, over the tub.

Mirrors
Beveled edge mirrors and framed mirrors are very popular right now. We are also seeing double framed mirrors as opposed to one big flat plain mirror.  Medicine cabinets are still popular but now they are recessed and the mirror sits flushed on the wall.  This is more in a smaller bath where storage is an issue.

Finishes
Brushed nickel and black are trending right now in with respect to finishes.  Chrome and brush nickel are the two big players and they rotate every five years.

Honey brown and brushed golds are also very trendy – but in five years that will look outdated.
