Route 28 may be a roadway that you have avoided due to the constant traffic that creeps along everyday, all day. But things are changing and plans to rid the major corridor of traffic lights to get cars moving is underway through the coming months.

If you’ve driven through the Rt. 28/I-66 interchange you have been caught up in the construction, but just last week a major reroute has occurred with the Rt. 28/Braddock Road interchange taken offline. And as improvements continue with that major intersection, along with the Rt. 28/I–6 interchange moving forward, Fairfax County and VDOT are looking south, towards the stretch of Rt. 28 from Rt. 29 to the Prince William County line.

A virtual meeting was held late October to preview plans for the $78 million widening of Rt. 28 along this corridor and public comment is open until Nov. 13.

Let’s take a look at what is happening and what is planned for the future of this major roadway corridor.

Completion of this major project is expected December 2020 with the opening of the Express lanes but a lot of work has already gone into the project, especially just this month with the rerouting of traffic to allow for the closure of the Braddock Road intersection.

Flyovers are planned at this major interchange to allow for the final traffic light to be taken out of the equation. Drivers will now access Braddock Road by using the Westfields Blvd. exit. Sign up for project email updates to keep up-to-date.

Moving south, work will begin on widening Rt. 28 to add in lanes, all while taking into account any sound barriers that will be needed to protect adjacent communities from noise. Construction is expected to begin Dec. 1, 2020 with a completion date of summer 2023.

For residents living close to the construction, the sound barriers will have a big impact on your property and lifestyle. Projections for sound went through modeling through 2040 based off of pre-COVID traffic patterns. Sound barriers constructed only if the people who are directly benefited from them vote in favor of them.

Since the county is still in the process of getting this project started, comments from the public are still being taken up until Friday, Nov. 13. You can listen in on a thorough virtual meeting of the widening project to get up-to-date on the project. Comments can be made through any of the following outlets:
