The system is divided into toll segments with 23 entrances and 20 exits throughout the corridor. Access ramps will be at major interchanges, with other access points from the toll lanes into the general lanes.
I-66 lanes opening with some updates that many travelers must be aware of.
By Lynn Norusis
The I-66 Construction Project outside the Beltway is moving along smoothly with plans to have the new lanes open by end of November 2022.
The overall project set forth with a plan for the following:
- Two express lanes in each direction from I-495 (the Capital Beltway) to Gainesville (University Boulevard);
- Three general purpose lanes in each direction;
- New and expanded transit service and park-and-ride lots; and
- Interchange improvements to enhance safety and reduce congestion, including auxiliary lanes between interchanges, where needed.
To date, the first nine miles of the 66 Express Lanes opened between Gainesville and Rt. 28 in Centreville on Sept. 10, and the remaining portion of the 66 Express Lanes between I-495 and Rt. 28 opened in the westbound direction on Nov. 19 with the eastbound section set to open by the end of the month.
One major change to the lanes Northern Virginian commuters should note is that the HOV restrictions for I-66 are now for HOV-3 and the lanes will be toll and HOV lanes 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The side exits, such as Monument Drive and Stringfellow Rd., will only be accessible from the toll lanes.
